Character: Mel, played by Reese Witherspoon
Summary: Melanie Smooter — known to the New York fashion crowd as Melanie Carmichael — is a noted fashion designer in New York City. Her designs have ran through a handful of catwalks, but it was her engagement to the NYC mayor's son, Andrew, that kept her fresh in the public eye.
She grew up in Pigeon Creek, Alabama, born to a conservative southern family, and developed close ties to the small town community. At ten years old, Melanie fell in love with Jake Perry, and they both married young. After an accidental pregnancy and subsequent miscarriage, Melanie ran out on Alabama and the people in her life - seven years prior to the film. The details of her past (and present, as she never divorced, despite the efforts on her end) were kept under wraps to the public, her New York friends, and her current fiancé. As far as her New York City life and everyone in it is concerned, Mel lived a comfortable life in Greenville, Alabama.

Main / Canon: Melanie takes place freshly after the wedding reception at the end of the film. She found what she was looking for; right where she left it. Her's and Jake's daughter doesn't exist yet in this verse.
Southern Belle: The good old days of Felony Melanie; Mel's a local hero who's still causing all sorts of trouble in Alabama. She's eighteen years old and hasn't gone through any pregnancy scares or miscarriages.
